Herpetology is the study of
amphibians and reptiles. There are two classes included in
this discipline - Amphibia (amphibians) and Reptilia (reptiles).
Within Amphibia, there are three orders (Caudata, Anura, and
Gymnophiona), 44 families, and more than 4,500 species. Among
the Reptilia exists four orders (Testudines, Crocodilia, Squamata,
and Rhynchocephalia), represented by 67 families and more
than 6,500 species.
