Ichthyology is the study of fishes. There are a total of three classes of fishes, including Agnatha (jawless lampreys and hagfish), Chondrichthyes (cartilaginous sharks, skates, and rays), and Osteichthyes (bony fish). Fish comprise the largest group of vertebrates, represented by more than 20,000 species.
